After my marriage broke up I decided that just as soon as the ink was dry on the divorce papers I’d start dating again, and I really didn’t want to date anyone who wasn’t officially single also so I thought that was a good idea. Then my divorce turned ugly and took over three years to complete. In the meanwhile, I became known around work and elsewhere as “that girl who doesn’t date”. After the divorce was final it wasn’t like I could start wearing a big sign saying “I’m finally ready!”
When the day arrived I signed up for an account on Plenty of Fish and started perusing profiles. My very first date was with a guy named Bill who had very handsome headshots and was super nice in our chats. I was scared to death to go on this first outing so I arranged for Bill to meet me, my best friend and her husband for a local monthly gallery night downtown.
Bill was great, fit right in with my people, but there was absolutely no attraction there for me – I realized this was the first time I’d seen Bill from the shoulders down (the view was not as expected), plus he was wearing a phone holster attached to his belt. We all had a good evening and parted ways as friends, but I let Bill know I wasn’t really interested in dating.
For the next 7 years Bill texted me “good morning” practically every day, and my friends and I would run into him downtown and around from time to time. Each time they’d ask me why I never gave Bill a second chance. Over the years I’d also learned what a great guy everyone thought he was so I decided that the next time he gave me an opening I’d suggest a lunch or dinner or something.
We ended up dating for two years and had a fabulous time together, making me wonder why I hadn’t opened up sooner. Then I began to catch Bill in little white lies, things he didn’t really need to lie about. But if I can’t trust someone on the little things, how could I possibly trust them not to lie about big things, so that ended that.
After telling a friend about the reasons behind the breakup she said, “you know he used to text me good morning too”. That statement actually made some of the weird little lies make sense, and also made me wonder – just how many people were on his daily “good morning” text list??
